A.D Graphics Interview

Desmond is a Graphic Designer that I came across on Instagram. I didn’t realise at first that he was a subscriber to my YouTube channel which I really appreciate, and then I saw his art and was blown away!

I was lucky enough to get an interview with Desmond about his work, inspiration and some tips he has for aspiring graphic designers.

Nadine: What's your name, where are you from and what do you do?

Desmond: I am Desmond Asakitikpi, from Nigeria, I am a Digital Illustrator and a Graphic Designer.

N: How did you get into graphic design? Do you come from a creative family?

D: I got into designs after coming across some design softwares. I always had the passion to create things, to actualise my ideas. Yes, I come from a creative family. My Dad taught us how to draw, he was artistic. He was my first teacher. Rest in Peace, Dad. My brothers also specialize in different creative paths of their own.

N: Do you have any hobbies outside of art?

D: Hobbies outside of art? Sure I do. I read, I listen to music, I practice foreign languages.

N: Walk us through a day in the life of Desmond.

D: Desmond goes around doing his morning routines, scribbles whatever ideas that come to his mind in his sketchbook, listens to music while taking a look at some designs on Pinterest and Instagram, goes to his computer and illustrates whatever idea he has set down. He spends more time indoors as he works from home. In the evenings, he takes little walks whilst listening to some music.

N: What inspires you? How would you describe your art?

D: God, Nature, my continent Africa, great artists and designers inspire me. I'll call my art Image Storytelling as I try to pass messages, stories through my artworks. I'll like to describe my art as my fascination about the past, the present, displaying the African culture.

N: What did 2020 teach you that you want to bring into 2021?

D: 2020 taught me discipline, determination and having a mind open to learning. I'd like to continue that way in 2021.

N: If you could work with any client (dead or alive) or your own project, what/who would it be and why?

D: I would love to work with Marvel Studios. Especially because of their recognition of the African culture, for example Black Panther.

N: What tips can you give to an aspiring graphic designer?

D: I'd say having Passion, Determination, backed up with Hardwork is essential. Keep doing what you love. Learn, improve. And most importantly, having God is the best.

Thank you Desmond!
